Love OR Hate

If you ask a teenager what they think about something, you’ll rarely get a boring answer. It’s usually love it or hate it. The new song everyone’s talking about? Love. Monday mornings? Hate. That one teacher who suddenly gives surprise tests? Definitely hate.

And honestly, there’s a reason things feel so intense at our age.

Teen life is kind of like living with the volume turned up. Friendships matter a lot more than people think. A small compliment can make your whole day better, and one awkward moment can feel like the end of the world (even though it usually isn’t). Our brains are still learning how to balance emotions and logic, which is why reactions sometimes swing between “this is amazing” and “this is the worst.”

But here’s the interesting part: those strong reactions also mean teens care deeply. When we love something, we really go all in, music, sports, friendships, causes, ideas. Many psychologists say teenage years are when people develop their strongest interests and values.

That’s why some of the biggest innovators, activists, and creators started discovering their passions during their teen years.

Of course, the downside is that hate can show up easily too. Stress from school, comparisons on social media, and pressure to figure out the future can make small problems feel huge. But over time, most of us learn something important: life isn’t always just love or hate. There’s a lot in between. Maybe the real skill of growing up is learning to pause before deciding which one it is.

Because sometimes the things we hated at first, a tough subject, a new school, meeting new people, end up becoming things we surprisingly love later.

So if your feelings swing between love and hate, don’t worry. That just means you’re paying attention to life. And honestly, that’s not a bad place to start.
